Just about everybody would like to have their teeth whiter. This has been possible for many years using a variety of different bleaching techniques with varying predictability. More recently the systems have been reduced to two main techniques:
  1. In office "power bleaching".
  2. Home bleaching using a custom mouth guard.

Power Bleaching
A a strong bleaching agent is placed on the surfaces of the teeth and the action of the active ingredient is accelerated using a very high power "plasma" or "laser" light unit. A noticeable difference can be achieved in as little as 1hr.

Home Bleaching
A mould of the teeth is taken and used to construct a closely fitting custom mouthguard or tray. Instructions are given on how to use the bleaching gel, which is placed in the tray. Ideally the tray should be worn for at least 4hr each day (usually at night), a noticeable difference is usually achieved within 2-3 uses but most treatments are continued over 2 weeks.

Other important points about bleaching:

  1. Bleaching does not make your teeth more susceptible to dental decay or gum disease.
  2. The results are not permanent although there will always be a noticeable difference from before treatment started, and teeth can always be "topped up" at a later date if required.
  3. Power bleaching is limited by the time set aside in the surgery - if the teeth are not white enough at the end of the allotted time then a further period has to be booked or progression on to a home bleaching technique is required.
  4. Not all discolorations are treatable with a bleaching agent, it is essential that an examination is carried out first to assess suitability and provide an indication of the results achievable.
  5. The bleach agents do not affect existing crowns and fillings.
  6. At this time a number of the bleaching agents have been withdrawn from sale in the UK due to licensing difficulties - it is hoped that they will be available again in 2000.
